From old days, people used to celebrate the folkways
of their country, just like their fathers and grandfathers used to
do. Many of these customs are still held today.
CHRISTMAS
Before Christmas, several preparations take place and include cleaning
houses and gardens. These preparations start a month before Christmas.
EPIPHANY DAY
The village’s priest goes around all the houses and sprinkles people
with holy water. In this way, evil spirits are believed to go away
and God blesses the house which is sprinkled with the holy water.
EASTER
Several Days before Easter Sunday housewives clean their houses.
They bake “flaounes”, a traditional Cypriot kind of cheese-bread,
on Holy Wednesday and Maundy Thursday. On Maundy Thursday, they
die eggs red and that is why Maundy Thursday is also known as “Kotsini
Pempti”-Red Thursday.
On Holy Saturday, people get their trucks and collect
firewood to light it; this is known as “Lambratzia”. Firewood is
lighted on Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.
On Easter Sunday, after the family has eaten together, they go to
the school’s yard and play traditional games such as carrying eggs,
running, pulling a rope, football and other games. On Easter Monday,
at night the whole village gathers at church and lights the firewood
“Lambratzia”, they roast lamb and they all eat together and have
fun.
ASSUMPTION DAY (15th AUGUST)
On the 15th of August, the village’s annual ball takes place with
the help of the Community’s Council, the Association of Development
and Renewal of Kato Dri. All people from Kato Dri, whether they
are in another town or country, gather at the restaurant “Platanos”.
The ball is a huge success. |
